On April 25 1507 at Ville St Die in France, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller printed the first globe map with 12 time zones to depict a new hemisphere and a new western ocean, known now as the Pacific Ocean, to re-awaken planetary understanding of earth in Western Civilization...that named America.

The word "America" was invented, born in the European Renaissance spirit of innovation to re-awaken humanity's understanding of earth sciences. "America" first appeared on the coast of South America, now known as Brazil-Uruguay-Argentina, in honor of astronomer-mariner Amerigo Vespucci who in 1499 invented the mathematical formula to measure the distance between planets. The 1507 Waldseemuller globe map used Vespucci's calculation of earth's circumference that concluded the existence of a new hemisphere not of Asia or Africa.

The question WHO NAMED AMERICA? is the America500 Birthday learning tool that energizes the public thirst for knowledge, serving to combat the decline of youth literacy in science, history and literature.

ENERGIZE AMERICA!

America 500 Birthday Extravaganza (2007-2012) is a 5-year global cultural initiative directed by independent citizens dedicated to celebrate knowledge and animate community life. The 2007 Future Vision "kickoff" championed the 500th Birthday Naming of America to open local windows for worldwide learning in collaboration with Ville St-Die, France. The 2012 Grand Finale "Culture Capital of America" commemorates the 500th Anniversary of Vespucci's death at Sevile, Spain.

Our Organizing Committee's outreach established the support of Mayors in 50 states to pass H.Res. 287 "America" (AHasting D-FL23) in Congress on July 11, 2007 in recognition of our Who Named America? education mission.

The "Spirit of Invention" 2008 Edition is moving town-to-town by asking the Mayor to tell this unknown story of America's naming in science, and expand the national platform "Bring Home The Spirit of History In Your Town."

ACT NOW

Champion the "Spirit of America" for its 500th Birthday Naming. The first step is for Mayor to act as the local ambassador by issuing a proclamation for Who Named America, endorsing the national mission "Bring Home The Spirit Of History In Your Town."

Here's how you can begin to help your community!

1) Call the Mayor's Office or City Clerk in your hometown to request the mayor proclaim June 2008 WHO NAMED AMERICA YOUTH EDUCATION MONTH, celebrating the 500th Birthday Naming of America.

2) Ask for 5-copies sent to the Organizing Committee, with one sent to your Representative in Congress. Email a pdf copy to us.
